Improve Life Safety and Building Inspections with Fire Alarm Houston

Regular fire inspections are great investments for the future. Fires create devastating aftermaths, which can be difficult to rise from. To be able to dodge this scenario, people made sure that their property is equipped with the proper fire prevention systems.

However, fire extinguishers and alarms are still not enough to keep buildings safe. In order to declare that your home/establishment is prepared for any fire-related disaster it must be able to pass the criteria on this checklist.

Checklist for Protecting from Fire Related Disaster:

  • Doors and aisles should not be obstructed
  • Each door has the proper lock/hardware on exit (no flush bolts, hasps, etc.)
  • If the door has a double-keyed deadbolt, it must have the sign, “This door to remain unlocked during business hours” over the main entrance
  • Exit signs must be illuminated and in good working order
  • Means of egress must be kept clear
  • Emergency lights must be regularly maintained and are in good working order
  • Doors with panic hardware shall have no other locking devices
  • Maximum occupancy signage must be posted in a conspicuous area near the main entrance for assembly occupancies
  • Extinguishers/Fire Protection Equipment
  • A minimum 2A108BC extinguisher(s) must be installed
  • Each extinguisher must have been serviced within the past year (a new service tag must be attached)
  • Extinguisher is properly mounted or secured in an approved cabinet
  • There is nothing obstructing the fire extinguisher
  • The top of the fire extinguisher must not exceed 5’ from the floor
  • Standpipe must be tested every 5 years
  • Hood extinguishing system is maintained, and its six month service and cleaning must be documented
  • A Class K extinguisher is installed within 30’ of hood and duct system
  • Fire alarm systems are tested annually and are in proper working order. The records should also be kept
  • 18’ clearance between storage and sprinkler head
  • Private hydrants are painted red and are maintained (flushed yearly and flows taken every three years)

Checklist About Electrical Issues:

  • Extension cords should not replace permanent wiring
  • No spliced or frayed cords/wires
  • Spacer(s) in electrical panel gap(s) provided
  • Switches and outlets are not broken or faulty
  • Electrical panel is not overloaded/obstructed
  • No multi-plug adapters in use, other than approved power strips
  • Circuit breakers must be labeled
  • Electrical cords do not extend through ceilings, walls and floors or under doors or floor coverings
  • No exposed wire in conduit
  • Electrical cover plates are all accounted for

Checklist About Appliances/mechanical Devices:

  • Appliances are all properly connected and vented
  • Propane is not in used and must not be stored in a building

Checklist About Storage/combustible Material/housekeeping:

  • Flammable liquids are properly stored
  • Oil rags in con-combustible container with lid
  • It is required to have “No Smoking” signs installed
  • Combustible material must not be stored near ignition source
  • Maintain clear and visible access to and around fire connection
  • No accumulation of combustible materials
  • Compressed gas cylinders secured
  • Area around building is free from combustible material (weed, boxes, trash, dried leaves, etc.)
  • Storage must not be found in exit stairways
  • Fire and smoke walls are maintained and have no opening other than those allowed by code

Miscellaneous:

  • Fire lanes are approved only by the fire department
  • Address numbers are posted in contrasting colors on front and rear doors for commercial establishments. 8’ on the front door and 4’ on the back. Other structures shall be 4’ except home daycares, which shall be 6’
  • The rapid key entry box is maintained by property owner
  • Charcoal or propane grills, and/or other open-flame cooking devices must not be located on combustible balconies or within 10’ of combustible construction. The only two exceptions are: 1) one and two family dwellings and 2) where balconies/decks are protected by automatic sprinkler systems
